History and Imagination!
Enjoy a trip to Naples with a tour to the ruins of Pompeii, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Explore the winding cliff roads en route to Sorrento where the Mediterranean glistens between lemon trees, or enjoy lunch in a typical Naples restaurant.
Visit this Roman city that was taken by surprise in AD 79 by the sudden eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, with the result that the majority of the population had no more time to escape and Pompeii was covered with a layer of ash that was metres high. Admire ancient ruins such as the forum, the thermal baths, the House of the Vettii and the Lupanar brothel, which will give you an interesting insight into daily life during the Pax Romana. Nowadays you can see various shapes of objects – even bodies – that were buried by the volcanic ash and pumice.
If you like, you can drive to Sorrento after the tour and experience Italy’s spectacular coast. Sorrento is world-famous for the gorgeous panorama of its steep coast, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the island of Capri and the entire Gulf of Naples. It is impossible not to be enchanted by these places. The air is clean, the food fantastic and the sea in the background provides a perfect picture-postcard backdrop for photos.
Alternatively, drive back to Naples to take a tour of the famous Piazza del Plebiscito or the little Via San Gregorio Armeno, world-famous as “the street of cribs”. The figurines are hand-made from porcelain, and you can eat a typical pizza. The San Gennaro chapel dedicated to St. Januarius, the patron saint of Naples and a saint of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches from the 3rd Century who is inside the cathedral, is also a highlight of this day before you are brought back to the ship.
